The new international classification of periodontological and perimplantation diseases was approved on November 9-11, 2017 at the World Congress of Periodontologists in Chicago, USA, with the joint organization of the American Academy of Periodontology, the European Federation of Periodontology and the participation of experts from around the world. Thus, the classification of periodontal diseases adopted in 1999 by the American Academy of Periodontology, widely used in recent years in clinical practice and teaching, has been completely updated, and a special section on perimplantation diseases has been added to this classification for the first time. Relevant clinical cases and diagnostic criteria were also presented to help scientists and practitioners use the new classification for early detection of gum diseases, analysis of periodontal treatment and long-term provision of periodontal health.
The new classification covers the sections of modern periodontology "new international classification of periodontological and peri-implantation diseases", "gum diseases and pathologies", "periodontal diseases", "systemic diseases and pathologies affecting periodontal supporting tissues" and "Peri-implantation diseases and pathologies" and is intended for use by oral hygiene specialists, residents and students.
The new classification of periodontological and peri-implantation diseases was developed on the initiative of the Azerbaijan Society of Periodontology with the support of the European Federation of Periodontology and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Compiled by the staff of the Azerbaijan State Advanced Training Institute for Doctors named after A. Aliyev and the Azerbaijan Medical University in the Azerbaijani language, it was published in the form of 5 scientific articles (
